What They Had is an inter-generational tale of love, loss and letting go. Bridget spent her childhood taking care of her family before marrying young and taking care of her two daughters and busy husband. When Ruth, her mother with late-stage Alzheimer’s Disease, wanders into a Chicago snowstorm and disappears on Christmas Eve, Bridget flies back to her hometown to convince her father Bert that it’s time to move Ruth into a memory care unit. But Bert refuses to let her go, generating the kind of conflict that opens up old wounds between Bert, Bridget and her brother Nick and threatens to destroy the close bonds between them. As they confront each other with painful and sometimes hilarious truths they’ve swept under the rug for decades, they each realize that the only way to love is to find the courage to let go. For Bridget, this means doing the unthinkable: break the hearts of everyone she loves in order to finally follow her own.
